What we are using the funds for: The arrival of Dr. John Wright, Curry General's orthopaedic surgeon, has triggered a significant investment of the Health District's funds, just over $200,000 in equipment specially designed for the surgeon's use.

Orthopaedic surgery is all about bones and joints; the framework of the body. There are special drills, nails, and screws all intended to hold bones together while the fracture heals itself. There are artificial joints that replace worn or damaged knees, elbows and hips. There are special scopes that allow Wright to work in and around joints without making major incisions.

In addition to the tools and implants, the District has acquired a specialized surgical table that is the object of this year's Curry Health Foundation / Rotary High on Health Fund Raiser. The table, called a Fracture Table, allows the surgeon to have 360 degrees of work space around the patient's leg, arm or hip, and allows Wright to position the limb or joint in a precise way to facilitate the repair being made. Apart from its heavy steel base the table is made of space-age carbon fiber composites that supports the patient's weight but are invisible to the X-Rays used by Wright to see into the body, bone or joint.

The Foundation and Rotary chose to support the Hospital's Bone and Joint program and selected the Fracture Table to be the focus of the annual High on Health Banquet.

The popular banquet is held this year at 5:30 pm on April 25 at the Gold Beach Event Center, Docia Suite Building. This year's theme is the "Roaring 20's" replete with Flappers, Charleston contest, live music and the traditional auction fundraiser. The event is fully pre-sold, and hopes to raise $20,000 to offset the cost of the $39,500 fracture table.

Curry General Hospital's Orthopaedic program allows patients to receive state of the art care close to home.

Club Report: Last week we heard from Margaret McHugh who is heading up this year's Rogue River cleanup. As in the past our Rotary Club is a sponsor of this event. They are still looking for boats to shuttle students along the river, if you can help please contact Margaret at the Curry Water and Soil Conservation District Office or call 247-2755 Extension 4#.

Helping Hands Haiti: I copied this from Jami's blog and thought you would all enjoy reading it!

Wednesday, April 8, 2009: I Love Gold Beach.  I am always moved by the generosity of my community! Last time I was headed to Haiti (and never made it there) I mailed over 200 lbs. of donations to Three Angels. 200 lbs. of love from Gold Beach and Brookings!!! Most of these donations were hardly solicited. I just mentioned the trip, and what I needed to bring, sent a couple of emails and WOW! My contact at Three Angels said, "Praise God for their generous hearts!" She is so right!

This time has been no different. I spoke at the Gold Beach Rotary Club meeting about Haiti and my upcoming trip last week. I was absolutely floored at the open hearts I found there. Now they are collecting donations, as is my book club, as are my friends! In fact, I receive a call or email at least once a day from someone asking how they can help....!

Club Report: Last week we had a very informative talk from Jami Sutter who is getting ready to leave for a week as a volunteer in Haiti. Jami's enthusiasm was contagious. We look forward to having her return and tell us all about it.

Attendance: Now that we have moved to the Event Center it is very important to keep up our attendance. Not only is it unfair to the members of the Friends of the Fair to take the time to cater our lunches and not have our members attend, according the our Rotary Bylaws "...attendance must be evidenced by the member's being present for at least sixty (60) percent of the time devoted to the regular meeting, either at this club or at any other Rotary club...." Is there are reason? Please let us know, attendance is very important, if you are not attending we encourage you to make up either online or at another club's meeting.

Today's Program: Jami Sutter will speak about her upcoming trip, as a volunteer in Haiti with Three Angels Children's Relief. Everyday, Three Angels Children's Relief, strives to impact the lives of the most impoverished children of Haiti. Their goal is to enrich their bodies with food, empower their minds through education and enlarge their spirits with love and compassion. They want to try to save these children from death and give them hope for their future.  Currently, they are working to accomplish this by focusing on the continued development of three specific programs; their Orphanage, Christian Academy and Medical Mission.

Club Report: Last week we met at the Fairgrounds Showcase Building. We have had some concerns brought up about meeting at the Senior Center. The board felt this should be brought before the membership, with a vote for a change of meeting spot. The membership voted to move our weekly meetings to The Showcase Building. Incoming President John Spicer talked with members regarding his year and committees. We are looking forward to a great year with John at the Rotary Wheel.

Rotary and Gates Foundation:  The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced today that it is awarding Rotary a $255 million challenge grant, which Rotary and its supporters will match with $100 million over the next three years. The announcement came during Rotary's International Assembly to all incoming district governors and Rotary senior leaders. Rotarians are strongly encouraged to share this news with their local media this week. A press release was created that Rotarians can customize by adding content describing their club's or district's polio eradication efforts, submitting photos of local participation in National Immunization Days, or adding comments from local Rotary leaders pledging continued support for this vital effort.
