TRAIL CLEANUP: Thanks to six hard working Rotarians our Rotary Fitness Trail at Buffington Park is back in good walking shape once again. The mowing and weed whacking was done by hardworking stalwarts Becky Atherton, Jeff Davis, Ron Dunlap, Don Martin, Walt Schroeder and John Spicer.
Thanks to Walt Schroeder for spearheading the trail cleanup. What would we do without you.

On a side note, if you say you are going to be there as several of us did when Walt asked for volunteers then you should be there or contact the membership chair and let them know if something else came up to keep you from being there, though 9 or 10 indicated at the last meeting they would help, only four of those who raised their hands made it. Two others did
not raise their hands and showed up to work.  These types of projects are very important for
our local community!

FITNESS: How is everyone doing with their Fitness Goals this week? I was so excited about this program and am now jealous of all of you for being able to participate. But my goal is to be back up there competing as soon as I can!

MEMBERSHIP MINUTE: Knowing that two Rotary clubs will be chartered someplace in the world today, tomorrow and every day provides a strong endorsement of the vitality and extension of Rotary service throughout the world. By inviting someone you know to a meeting insures the health and vitality of your own club and enlarges the ideals of Rotary worldwide.

ROTARY STORE: Check out all the cool items available for sale on the back table. Be
a proud Rotarian wherever you may be!

CHANGING OF THE GUARD: Welcome New District Governor Claire Little! Below is an excerpt from her Online Newsletter.  To read more please go to: http://district5110.org/uploads/Newsletter

"Good morning Generators and welcome to our 2010-2011 Rotary year! It is a privilege and pleasure to serve as your district governor. Rotary provides us with many opportunities to grow personally and  professionally by engaging us in humanitarian service in our community and our world. This year our emphasis is to promote continuity and focus on projects that address the needs listed in Rotaryʼs six areas of focus. I encourage clubs to be creative and to work collaboratively to produce stronger, sustainable outcomes.

"Building Communities--Bridging Continents", our 2010-2011 theme, really fits a strategic vision for all Rotary districts. It is at the club level that Rotarians are "Building Communities." Itʼs through this community involvement that we attract members to Rotary. Focusing equally on the second part of the theme "Bridging Continents" will allow District 5110 clubs to reach higher levels of international service."

TRAIL CLEANUP
About 20 some years ago our Rotary Club built a Fitness Trail in the woods above Buffington City Park. Ray Rediske was the spark plug that kept the trail in shape. Since Ray's passing the trail has become a "jungle" and reflects on Gold Beach Rotary. The Party at the Park is coming up soon and we need to make the trail walkable again.

On Saturday, July 10 those who are willing and able will meet in the east parking lot and tackle
the job from 9 a.m.until noon. If we have enough help, we should get it cleared and usable and
some of the fitness stations can be taken care of later. If you can't come the full three hours, every
bit you can spare will be appreciated. Tools needed include heavy duty mowing machines,(not regular lawn mowers) heavy duty weed whackers, gas powered hedge shears, pruning shears, machetes, hay forks, and steel rakes. A DR weed and brush mower would be great. I have a sickle bar mower and gas powered shears we can use.Let's get it done so we can still be proud to have our Rotary name on the trail.

MEMBERSHIP MOMENT: The Committee of Bryan Little, Gloria Eide, and Mary Stansell would like to extend their thanks to the following Rotarians who assisted with the Rotary Booth at the Party at the Port. Peter and MaryAnn, Gary Saks, Dave Little, Mark Sayler, BJ and Don Martin, Corey Bard, Becky Atherton, Amber Hughes, and Jeni Meyer.

MEMBERSHIP MOMENT: As the Rotary year draws to a close thank your President, Board and all committee members for a job well done. Just because they are leaders doesn't mean that they don't like to be recognized for all the time and effort put in during the past year.  Just say thanks!

FITNESS PROGRAM NEWS
Are you up for the challenge? Miles are accumulating, challenges are being drawn. If you have any questions about how your fitness routine measures up please ask the Fitness Chairs, Allan, Becky or Mary. Let's see how fit we can make our club.

After much discussion, and a bit of argument I think we have decided to how we will be tracking our miles. At first we thought that 20 miles per team would win a prize...well, then several individuals realized how they could do 20 miles in a week that did not seem fair to other teams and this would not make it a Team Endeavor. So the Teams will have to come up with 100 miles for the first prize.
Team members need to set their own personal goals, please don't let your team members down. If you signed up and do not want to make the commitment then let your team members know. There are some great team names out there...have you turned yours in yet?

Education and involvement will make us better Rotarians and we will want to share in this unique

If so then you will be happy to sign up for our Rotary Club Fitness Challenge.  Beginning July 1, 2010 we will be tracking our fitness progress on a per mile basis.  There are several ways to walk a mile: walk, run, bike, golf, tennis, exercise class, road

There will be a prize for the first team to reach 20 miles, then the first team to reach 100 miles. We will be passing around a sign up sheet at the next couple of meetings, if you are out of town and want to sign up please let Allan or Becky

MEMBERSHIP MOMENT: "I am a Rotarian because a dear old primary school headmaster sought me out as a young country newspaper editor and invited me to join the Rotary Club of Parkes, NSW, Australia, many years ago.  I have remained a Rotarian for 35 years because it did not take me long to realize that this unique vocationally based service organization provided the opportunity for ONE person to be part of an amazing humanitarian army doing special things in our world.  We heal the sick, care for the poor, provide basic literacy and numeracy skills, provide food and fresh water for the hungry, and  - in recent times - provide educational resources for a new breed of ʻpeace fightersʼ playing a major role in conflict resolution around our world.  I have great pride in Rotaryʼs ongoing mentoring of young people and dedication to lifting ethics in business, and I draw daily inspiration from the knowledge that Rotary International impacts 33,000 communities throughout our world EVERY DAY!"

ROTARY DISTRICT 5110:
Do you know what Rotary District we are in?  Have you ever looked at the Rotary District 5110 web site? Take the time, look it over, the amount of information available is immense!  Go to WWW.RotaryDistrict5110.com Here is a tidbit of info off the page..
District 5110 encompasses the southern two-thirds of the state of Oregon and the very northern part of the state of California. Geographically the district is a diverse landscape, from the rocky shores of the Pacific Ocean to the snow-covered 10,000 foot mountain peaks to dramatic deserts.
The 4,087 Rotarians in our district are proud of our many service projects both in our communities and around the world.  We welcome you to not only visit one of our 71 clubs, but also to have the opportunity to introduce you to the many educational, cultural and recreational opportunities available here. Let District 5110 Rotarians show you what good hosts we are!

MEMBERSHIP MOMENT: To Do....Take it upon yourself to invite a new member to an activity or a committee.  Stop the revolving door of membership.  New members who are not included or donʼt feel welcome or involved leave Rotary in an alarming numbers. We work too hard to recruit new face.  Donʼt lose them because of neglect.   Stop the revolving door

MAKEUPS: Attendance at our weekly meetings has been less than the desired 60% goal imposed by Rotary.  If you are unable to make a weekly meeting - no problem there are many available online make-ups.  The Seattle Rotary club has a fascinating video archive including speakers like Head Coach Pete Carroll of the Seattle Seahawks, Gil Kerlikowske US Drug Czar, and Admiral Gary Roughead Chief of Naval Operations - just to name a few.  Opportunities also exist to view programs from Bend High Desert, online videos from the District, Rotary International Training Modules, or you may even surf the websites of four District 5110 clubs to qualify as a make-up meeting.  Let Secretary Deb Cyparski know you've surfed the web and she'll note your attendance.  It's just that easy!  Find out more about online make-ups on our website GoldBeachRotary.com
