Rotary Club of Gold Beach * Meeting each Wednesday at noon at the Event Center on the Beach Showcase Building * May 19, 2010 * Meeting #44
TODAYʼS PROGRAM: Peace
UPCOMING PROGRAMS May 19 - Board Meeting May 20-24 - District 5110 Conference and Training Assembly August 21 - Party at the Park August 28 - Salmon Derby September 11 - Bike the Rogue
MEMBERSHIP MOMENT: To Do....Take it upon yourself to invite a new member to an activity or a committee. Stop the revolving door of membership. New members who are not included or donʼt feel welcome or involved leave Rotary in an alarming numbers. We work too hard to recruit new face. Donʼt lose them because of neglect. Stop the revolving door
MAKEUPS: Attendance at our weekly meetings has been less than the desired 60% goal imposed by Rotary. If you are unable to make a weekly meeting - no problem there are many available online make-ups. The Seattle Rotary club has a fascinating video archive including speakers like Head Coach Pete Carroll of the Seattle Seahawks, Gil Kerlikowske US Drug Czar, and Admiral Gary Roughead Chief of Naval Operations - just to name a few. Opportunities also exist to view programs from Bend High Desert, online videos from the District, Rotary International Training Modules, or you may even surf the websites of four District 5110 clubs to qualify as a make-up meeting. Let Secretary Deb Cyparski know you've surfed the web and she'll note your attendance. It's just that easy! Find out more about online make-ups on our website GoldBeachRotary.com

TODAYʼS PROGRAM: Rural Education Initiatives
UPCOMING PROGRAMS May 6 - New Member Education Program - see below May 12 - Brent Siebold, OR State Parks May 20-24 - District 5110 Conference and Training Assembly August 28 - Salmon Derby
MEMBERSHIP MOMENT: New member education program; This Thursday, the 6th, at 6:30pm we will hold a new member assembly. It is part of the induction process for new members into our club. We invite new members and their partners to an evening of Rotary education; We hope to give you an in-depth knowledge that will make them want to stay in Rotary. All members of the club are invited. Welcome to Rotary.
SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT! Rotary was started in 1905. To put in perspective how things have changed in the last century, here are some statistics for the year 1909:
- The average life expectancy for men was 47
- Fuel for a car was sold in drug stores only
- Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub
- Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone
- There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads
- The max speed limit in most cities was 10 mph
- The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower!
- The av. US wage in 1909 was 22 cents per hr
- The av. US worker made between $200 and $400 per year. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year. A dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year
- More than 95 percent of all births took place at HOME
- Ninety percent of all Doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION! Instead, they attended so-called
medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press AND the government as 'substandard'
- Sugar cost four cents a pound
- Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen
- Coffee was fifteen cents a pound
- Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo
- The Five leading causes of death were:
1. Pneumonia and influenza 2. Tuberculosis 3. Diarrhea 4. Heart disease 5. Stroke
- The American flag had 45 stars
- The population of Las Vegas, Nevada, was 30!
- Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented yet
- There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day
- Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write and only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school
- Eighteen percent of households had at least one full-time servant or domestic help
This was "pasted" here without my personally typing it. From here, others all over the WORLD can read it - all in a matter of seconds!
What a difference a century has made, and what a difference Rotary has made in our world! Try to imagine what it may be like in another 100 years....and what more impact Rotary will have upon world conditions. Who will YOU invite to join you in Rotary service? |
